Travel insurance can be a very over complicated choice, there are so many providers with so many options. We have tried to bring together the best options for your travel insurance needs in to one place so you can make a simple choice based on the keyfacts of each company and policy.

To give you some help we have provided a breakdown of the most important sections of a travel insurance policy.

Cancellation - this cover pays for unused travel and accomodation, which has been paid prior to departure from home providing the cancellation is necessary and unavoidable.

Curtailment - this will cover you for the value of the proportion of the travel / accomodation, which has not been used, and which has already been paid for if you have to cut a trip short.

Medical and other expenses - cover is usually for £5 million to £10 million covering illness and injury.

Personal baggage and possessions - Loss or damage to personal possessions taken on the trip, there will normally be an overall limit and then limits for single items, valuables, sets and sports equipment.

Delayed baggage - payments can be made for a period of delay.

Money and travel documents - cover for loss of personal money, travel documents and passports.

Personal accident - payment is made dependant on the personal injury i.e. death, loss of and eye or limb and total disablement.

Personal liability - Legal liability to a third party arising during a trip as a result of accidental injury to any person or accidental loss or damage to property.

Travel disruption - missed departure, travel delay and abandonment.

Legal expenses - this cover will allow you to cover all legal bills associated with a travel claim or problem.

Travel risks - some policies will cover, hijack, kidnap, mugging and catastrophe

Winter sports - this is an optional extra and normally covers delayed ski equipment, loss of ski pack and piste closure.
